Strawberry & Thyme

Author: Patricia Koine
Thorncliffe Park Urban Farmers’ art & story project explores gardens as spaces where human creativity and nature’s creativity meet, and is being exhibited this fall at the Evergreen Brickworks. TPUF is a grassroots organization that’s been growing healthy food, community & environmental education for over 10 years.

I Am Strawberry

I am from 3 green leaves
I am nestled in 5 petals white
flowers
I bud from the golden centre
of the 5 white petalled flowers
seated in 3 green leaves
I am strawberry
water me well and I will
delight with fruit

The Garden’s Prayer

Our Garden,
Which Art on Earth,
Hallowed be thy ground.
Thy produce come,
Thy yield be grown,
On clay as it is in the pollinator beds.
Give us this day our daily kale,
Callaloo, zucchini, squash, lettuce, and chives,
And forgive us our invasive plants
That grow freely and wild all over the garden.
Deliver our Garden from the bugs
And critters that crunch their way about the stalks.
For thine are thy summer blossoms
That spring forth from the spring showers.
Thy harvest thy glory,
For every season – rain, shine, the perfect elements.
Year in, year out from April to October or thereabouts,
From Seed to Fruit to Compost to Seed again.
Time and time again, cycle after cycle,
Forever and ever, we return to our Garden afresh,

Anew, to begin again.

Amen. Ameen. AUM. Ase. And So It Is!

Time & Thyme Again

Thyme!
Lady Thymus vulgaris, common
yet regal.
Thyme!
She, a Flowering plant.
Thyme!
She, a part of Mint Family
Lamiaceae.
Thyme!
Draped in bushy evergreen woody
shrubs and clusters of purple-pink
flowers.
Thyme!
She exudes aromatic scents from
her small green leaves.
Thyme!
She heightens flavours and tastes
divine when added to teas and
cooking.
Thyme!
Her characteristic slightly spicier
than oregano and sweeter than
sage.
Thyme!
Befriend her and she will surprise
you as she tenderly and overtime
with her aromatic oils…
clears acne
lowers blood pressure
helps alleviate coughs
boosts immunity
disinfects
repels pests
boosts moods
prevents bacterial infections
helps treat yeast infections
Thyme!
Lady Thymus vulgaris, common
yet regal, long live.
